I made this guitar for myself about 3 years ago. The date is 3 weeks into the survival of my heart attack. I have made guitars that I would not mind having, but since my first guitar in 1970, I haven’t dedicated one to myself.
This one was inspired by a couple of Paulino Bernabe guitars that haunted me.
Anyway, luthing can be humbling at times. When I glued the bridge on this guitar, the top actually cracked. First time for everything. I repaired the crack and played it (it was great) but it developed something that annoyed me, and I decided to give it a fresh start.
First, the top must be removed….
- Just having some fun…
- a chisel in the belly….
- Rout it out.
- Break the harmonic bars…
- sort of a guitar within a guitar
- Bernabe style bracing. Notice the ‘broken’ bar on the right (bass) side of the soundboard. The X bracing.
- Dedicated to ….. ME!
- The main thing is to get if off cleanly. Pieces are OK.
- The binding is gone. now to remove the remnants of the purfling…
- The face is off, now clean and almost ready for a transplant.
Coming soon… a rescue!
